Sharp Rise In Number Of Patients Waiting On Trolleys At Ennis Hospital

There's been a sharp rise in the number of patients waiting on trolleys at Ennis General Hospital in the past eleven months.

New figures from the INMO show that University Hospital Limerick has experienced an 18 per cent rise in overcwding since the same time last year.

122 people were waiting on trolleys at Ennis General Hospital in the eleven months to the end of Novemeber, compared to none in the same period last year.

While, University Hospital Hospital Limerick saw an increase of 18 per cent with over 6,800 people waiting for a bed over the eleven month period, up from just over 5,500 last year.

This latest analysis of trolley watch figures from the the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation has found that the level of overcrowding continues to increase in Emergency Departments and Wards across the country.

It comes as the region's main hospital experienced a drop in figures this week with no patients waiting on trolleys in the Emergency Department on Monday and figures remaining in the single digits so far this week.

There's been a net increase of 30 new beds at the hospital following a series of works that have been completed in the past few weeks.

The figures have been published as talks aimed at averting strike action by nurses in the Emergency Departments of 7 hospitals are due to begin at the Workplace Relations Commission today.
