The system which has been successfully trialed in other parts of the country has been announced in light of the recent decision to scale back the GP out-of-hours service.

There was outrage in large parts of the county last month when ShannonDoc confirmed it was to reduce it's services in Kilrush, Ennistymon and Killaloe.

But now it's announced a new service in the west of the county, which it's hoped will minimise the impact of a continued shortage of doctors in the area.

A video-based remote doctor service will be introduced in Kilrush, allowing the service to open from 8pm until 10pm from Monday to Friday, while this will be supported by an on-duty doctor in Miltown Malbay from 6pm to 8am.

The system allows a remote doctor to connect with the Kilrush clinic, and has already been trialed in the North East.
