The proprietor of a Shannon service station has accused the government of trying to “drive the driver off the road” with planned increases in excise duty.
The tax, which was slashed in March 2022 as a means of stemming rising fuel costs, was increased by 6 cents per litre of petrol and 5 cents per litre of diesel on the 1st of June and is expected to increase by a further 7 cents for petrol and 5 cents for diesel on the 1st of September.
With consumer prices having risen by 6.1% in June according to the CSO, many fear that increases in fuel prices will put additional strain on road users.
Darragh O’Connor of Texaco Shannon says the planned increase in excise duty is difficult to justify.
