A new school extension in Clare is expected to “significantly enhance the daily experience of both students and teachers”.
Clare County Council has given the green light to St Tola’s National School in Shannon for a single-storey development which will include additional special educational needs classrooms.
The Board of Management of St Tola’s National School applied for planning permission for a single-storey extension to the existing school located in Tullyglass on May 27th.
The plans state this would accommodate two additional classrooms which would be used to teach pupils with special educational needs including physical or sensory disabilities, emotional or behavioural disorders, autism spectrum conditions, or multiple disabilities.
An expansion of the school car park from 22 to 28 spaces is also proposed, with two accessible spaces to be provided.
The application says the development would “significantly enhance the daily experience of both students and teachers by creating a more cohesive school layout”.
Additionally, it’s claimed the “visual upgrade” of the school’s front elevation will benefit both the school and the surrounding neighbourhood, while the extra car parking spaces will be a “valuable addition” to the area, and can be used by residents during evenings and weekends”.
Consent has been secured by the applicant from both the Killaloe Diocese and Clare County Council.
The local authority approved the application on July 21st subject to six conditions.
