The 44 year old from Burnscove Kishykirk in Limerick claimed he was fired as the leisure manager at Charleville Park Hotel because of a " homophobic" reaction to his other business- a men’s sauna in Shannon.

In evidence at the Employment Appeals Tribunal Eamon Ryan insisted he was open and honest about the County Clare club and that while he was a director – he didn’t work there.

The 44 year old was fired from the Cork hotel in August 2010 after working there for two years and his wife Niamh Ryan said her husband’s dismissal had a horrendous impact on their finances and forced them at one point to burn a floor in the house to heat the home.

General Manager of the Charleville Park Hotel said the issue had been with Mr Ryan’s dishonesty and breach of contract and had nothing to do with the nature of his other business.

However he also admitted a breach of contract was not a dismissible offence

The tribunal found Mr Ryan was dismissed unfairly and awarded him 25 thousand euro in compensation.
