Shannon Resident Says Town Has Been “Butchered By Grass Cutting Mess”

A Shannon resident claims the appearance of the town has been butchered by sub-standard grass cutting.

The standard of lawn and green area maintenance has been heavily criticised by elected representatives and residents, since the council appointed a new contractor this year.

Among the claims is that some residential areas have not been cut at all, while in other areas the grass has been left too high and that roadside trimming has been done to a very poor standard.

Tullyglass resident Patrick Slattery says it’s an insult to hard working community volunteers.

Clare County Council has said “Following representations from local councillors, Shannon Municipal District has engaged with our contractor and taken measures to address the public’s concerns.

“The contractor has reviewed the sequence of cuts so this should be more obvious to the public over the coming weeks.

“The strimming cycle was brought forward by one month and we have been flexible with the contract in order to respond to local issues and the unprecedented level of growth in recent weeks.

“We can no longer use pesticides so we have trialled a non-herbicide solution for roadside weeds treatment. This is supported with mechanical treatment by our sweeper.

“In addition, we will be engaging with local community groups to build capacity in green maintenance over the next twelve months.”
