The Shannon Protection Alliance is welcoming comments by the Environment Minister on the future of Lough Derg.

Serious concerns have been raised in East Clare over proposals to extract water from the river Shannon aimed at supplying the mid-lands and Dublin.

Irish Water have previously outlined details four proposals aimed at supplying water to the midlands and Dublin.

Calls have been made for an increase in Government funding to deal with private and local roads in Clare.

Clare County Councillors want the Local Improvements Scheme which was abandoned three years ago to be re-instated but the local authority says its unlikely there will be any increase in funding locally in the coming year.

Two of these would see water taken from different points on Lough Derg, while the third would see water taken from the River Shannon at Parteen.

However, opponents in East Clare and elsewhere in the MidWest have expressed concerns, saying it would harm both the environment and the local economy.

They want more done to stop water leaks in Dublin, while an alternative option of desalination has also been proposed.

However, speaking on Clare FM's Morning Focus, Environment Minister Alan Kelly said he would ensure that nothing would be done to jeopardise Lough Derg.

The Shannon Protection Alliance, who are among the project's opponents, have welcomed the Minister's comments.

However, spokesman Gerry Siney says they will continue to oppose the project
