Passengers flying out of Shannon could soon be 'on the road to Rhode Island.'

Reports in the US say Norwegian Air, which is looking to begin transatlantic flights fromShannon in 2017, is considering T.F. Green Airport in Providence, Rhode Island as one of the destinations for its services.

In 2014, Taoiseach Enda Kenny revealed that the government was in talks to set up a direct flight between the Mid-West airport and Rhode Island while Shannon officials have met with their counterparts in the US state.

Norwegian is expected to unveil its plans in the New Year, but for now officials at Shannon are remaining tight-lipped.

However, Shannon Group CEO Matthew Thomas says they're hopeful the filghts will begin next year, and that services will grow into the future.
