A member of the Shannon Coastguard says he will campaign for Ireland to be the first country to grant aircraft maintenance licences to crew members, once he calls time on his career.
Winch operator with Shannon based rescue helicopter 115, Paul Truss, will retire next month following 23 years of service which saw him serve in all four of the country’s search and rescue bases.
In this time he undertook 1,172 taskings including rescuing the only two survivors of the Honeydew II in 2007.
Paul says search and rescue crews are those with the most expertise using the equipment, and should be given the permission to maintain the aircraft.
