Shannon Chamber Confident US Tariffs Won’t Prompt FDI Exodus From Region

Shannon Chamber has expressed confidence that while planned US tariffs will present challenges for foreign direct investment companies in this county, it won’t result in a mass exodus.

Donald Trump has this week indicated he’ll be introducing tariffs on pharmaceuticals on so-called ‘Liberation Day’ on April 2nd, citing Ireland as he spoke in the Oval Office.

Former CEO of Shannon Development and founder of the Thompstone Group, Kevin Thompstone, has described the move as “counter-productive” following decades of world trade organisations, economies and trading blocks working to remove tariffs and promote trade.

Speaking on Clare FM’s Morning Focus, Thompstone, who chairs the Chamber’s CEO Forum says businesses trading to the US will be impacted, but the companies based in Shannon are here mainly to supply the European market and the rest of the world.
