Clare’s county town is the second cleanest town in the country with Shannon, which recently joined the League, finishing in 13th place.

The number of litter free areas around the country is at an all time high with more than two thirds of towns now litter free.

These results are the first of 2009 and a massive 41 areas across the country have achieved litter free status.

Ennis has maintained its ‘Clean to European Norms’ status from the last round of 2008, leaving it in 2nd place nationwide while Shannon, having re-entered the league, has finished in 13th position, also ‘Clean to European Norms.

The results of the survey found that in Ennis, eight out of the ten sites surveyed got the top litter grade which meant that these were not just clear of litter but fresh and well presented environments including Woodstock View, Shopping Centre Car Park, St. Clare’s School and N85 Approach and R475 Approach Roads.

In Shannon, 7 out the ten areas surveyed got the top litter grade while all four of the approach routes surveyed got the top litter grade creating a positive first impression of the town
