It’s just over four months since the Programme for Government was published and among it’s commitments was to support Shannon Airport as a hub for testing new aviation technologies.

It looks like this goal is one step closer to coming to fruition as the Shannon Airport Authority has now applied for planning permission to develop an advanced aerial mobility research lab on site.

The development would also include a new taxiway, an aircraft set down area, reconfigured airside boundaries and 48 parking spaces.

It’s understood the facility would be operated in conjunction with the Shannon based Future Mobility Campus Ireland, whose name and logo appears on the computer generated images of the proposed building in planning documents.

Future Mobility Campus Ireland describes itself as Ireland’s leading hub for research, development, and innovation in the international mobility and transportation landscape across air and land.

Last week the company jointly hosted the unveiling of Beta Technologie’s Alia CTOL at Atlantic Aviation’s Hanagar 1 at Shannon Airport which was the first ever fully electric aircraft to fly in Ireland.
