Serious concern has been raised over a drop in passenger numbers at Shannon Airport.

New CSO figures show just under 1.6 million people travelled through the Midwest facility last year, a 4.5% drop on 2015 figures.

It was the only Irish Airport to experience reduced numbers, with Dublin seeing 6% growth and Kerry and Cork witnessing a rise of 3 and 3.4% respectively.

The figures don’t include transit business though, which accounts for 9% of the airport’s passenger numbers, and a spokesperson has told Clare FM that there has been 5% growth in the first quarter of this year.
