A farmer escaped injury but was left deeply shaken after the incident which happened at a manual private crossing in the townland of Ballymorris shortly before 3 o’clock.

It’s not yet known how his tractor collided with the train, amid speculation the vehicle may have jolted foward by accident as he waited at the crossing.

However passengers on the train say that the service was running late and should have passed the stop up to 15 minutes earlier.

Minor damage was discovered on the train when it stopped at Sixmilebridge and bus transfers for subsequent rail journeys between Ennis and Limerick were put in place for the afternoon while the scene of the collision was sealed off for an inspection.
