Britain's Prince Charles and his wife Camilla will begin their first official joint visit to Ireland arriving in Shannon today and taking in enagements in Galway City, Oranmore and the Burren.

This is the third official visit of Prince Charles to Ireland and his second time to include County Clare in his schedule, though he was forced to cancel his first planned trip to the Burren due to the death of his Aunt, Princess Margaret in 2002.

Ahead of today's visit, Clarence House has said the Prince of Wales plans to highlight environment and conservation projects through two engagements – the first at the Marine Institute in Oranmore – and the second  – a visit to the Burren in which it notes has been farmed for nearly 6,000 years and is famous for its wild, rocky terrain, rare plant life, biodiversity and archaeology.

It's understood Prince Charles has expressed a wish to learn about the challenges facing the Burren's farming community as he'll meet those involved in farming and conservation projects this afternoon.

Today's first official enagement for Charles and Camilla is a visit to NUI Galway, before they go their seperate ways, with the Duchess of Cornwall due to visit a Galway School, the Druid Theatre and an event celebrating the food and drink of the Wild Atlantic Way.

After his visit to the Burren, Prince Charles will be rejoined by his wife to attend a private dinner with President Michael D. Higgins and his wife Sabina.
