Search And Rescue Operation Launched At Cliffs Of Moher

A search and rescue operation was mounted at the Cliffs of Moher following reports of a person in difficulty.

The Shannon based search and rescue helicopter, Rescue 115, was alerted late last night along with Gardaí and the Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard.

It followed reports from two people walking the popular cliff trail at Aill Na Searrach near the Cliffs of Moher, of a light close to the bottom of the steep cliff.

On arrival, rescue teams abseiled down to the location where they found a young German woman in a small tent.

The woman was helped to the cliff top shortly before midnight and taken by the Coast Guard to nearby Doolin where accommodation was arranged for her.

The area is considered to be extremely dangerous and signs at the top warn people of the hazards.
