A search is to resume this morning for a fisherman washed off rocks on the North Clare coast last evening.
The 42-year-old man, who is understood to be Latvian and not living in the Clare area, had been fishing at an area known locally as the Fisherman’s Climb at Ailladee between Doolin and Fanore, when he was swept out to sea by a strong wave at around 5:30.
Two people who were with him at the time raised the alarm after one jumped into the water in an effort to save him.
The Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard, the Shannon-based rescue helicopter and Gardai went to the scene and continued their search until darkness forced them to abandon their efforts.
Naval divers are expected to arrive in North Clare to assist in the operation when it resumes this morning.
