Scrapping Of Jail Terms Described By Clare Campaigners As Evidence Their Movement Is Gaining Ground

A prominent Clare Anti-Water Charges campaigner says the scrapping of jail terms for people refusing to pay their bills is evidence their movement is gaining ground.

Cabinet Ministers are set to sign off on the plan tonight, which will see money deducted from peoples' income instead.

The new proposals replace the threat of jail with annual penalties imposed on those who can't pay water charges, and also the likes of TV licenses and other small bills.

Opposition TDs have dismissed the announcement as a stunt while an anti water charges campaigner here thinks their long campaign has forced the government's hand.

Speaking to Clare FM, former local election candidate Niamh O'Brien said she feels it's proof that the coalition is worried.
