It comes as Clare County Council has submitted an application for funding under the Rural Economic Development Zones initiative to develop the tourism potential of the West Clare Island.

Uninhabited since 1979, Scattery Island – also known as Inish Cathaigh – is located approximately one mile from Kilrush in the Shannon Estuary.

It's home to a monastery founded in the early 6th century by St. Senan and features the ruins of six churches and one of the highest Round Towers in Ireland.

Efforts to develop the tourism potential of the area are now progressing, with a funding application submitted by Clare County Council under the REDZ initiative.

The OPW has also appointed conservation architects who will undertake a Conservation and Management Plan, which is due to progress over the coming weeks.

While, a new ferry provider will be formally appointed shortly, to provide a service from Kilrush Marina during the summer months.
