The President of the National Association of GPs says the Minister for Health could go a long way to help people with chronic diseses if he extends discretionary medical cards today.
The topic is being discussed by Cabinet and its expected Minister Leo Varadkar will announce a system where doctors can request a card on medical grounds for someone who has been refused on financial assesment.
It has also been suggested that he will announce measures to include children who have serious illnesses in a bid to calm doctor's fears over plans for free care for under sixes.
Scarriff Doctor Conor McGee says his organisation hopes Minister Varadkar will address their concerns today.
