Same Sex Marriages Abroad To Be Recognised In Ireland From Next Week

Gay and lesbian couples who got married abroad will have their unions automatically recognised in Ireland from next week.

The last legal hurdle to same sex marriage was cleared yesterday when Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald signed the commencement order for the Marriage Equality Act.

The Tánaiste Joan Burton also signed the accompanying legislation under the Civil Registration Act.

That means the first same sex marriages at home can begin on Monday.
