Earlier the health minister Leo Varadkar said it was possible that the Commission might miss its deadline of December – and not report until after the election.

But the Tánaiste says the earlier inquiry would help the new one to hit the ground running.

Meanwhile, the sale of SiteServ by the former Anglo Irish Bank cost the state almost 20 million EURO more than previously thought.

New documents published by the Department of Finance show the sale by IBRC – to Denis O'Brien's Millington firm – resulted in the bank writing off debts of 119 million euro.

That's higher than the 100 million euro in write-offs previously reported.
