Gardai will be out in force on Clare roads using speed enforcement technology, while padestrians are being encouraged to wear high visability clothing while walking on county roads.

There'll be an increased Garda presence on Clare roads this weekend as par of their Bank Holiday Road Safety campaign.

They'll be using speed enforment technology including laser hand-held devices, speed vans and in-car detection systems over the course of the four days.

The campaign led to 40 speeding convictions in the county over the same period last year.

24 people have lost their lives in the western Garda division so far this year, two of them in Clare.

Head of the Clare Garda Traffic Corps, Inspector John Ryan says speeding is one of the main causes of fatalities on our roads.

Meanwhile, a Clare County Councillor who's brother lost his life in a road accident is pleading with padestrians to wear a high-visability clothing when walking on county roads.

Jarlaith Colleran was crossing the road in Roslevan, 13 years ago next Monday on a dark stormy night, when he was struck by a car resulting in his death.

Clare Colleran Molloy says wearing a high-vis jacket can mean the difference between life and death.
