Serious crime has risen according to figures due to be published by the Central Statistics Office.
Assault, theft and burglary are said to be up by around 15 per cent in the last year.

The figures are being carefully reviewed before publication following last year's critical report by the Garda Inspectorate which found many crimes going unreported.
