One projection says the race between right-wing Freedom Party candidate Norbert Hofer and former Greens leader Alexander van der Bellen is too close to call.
Support for Mr Hofer's nationalist, Eurosceptic and anti-immigration party has been boosted by the migration crisis.
But the leader insists he's not fascist or racist – just a man who puts Austrians first.
