‘Loss of control shortly after launch’ has been found as the probable cause for a fatal hang glider accident in Miltown Malbay.
The Air Accident Investigation Unit Ireland has published the findings of the accident involving a man in his 60’s that took place last September.
At approximately 4pm on the 18th September 2022, the Pilot, a man aged 62, attempted a powered hang glider flight from an agricultural field, located near Miltown Malbay.
The powered hang glider travelled less than 100 metres before losing atlitude and impacting with the ground.
The Pilot sustained fatal injuries to his chest and neck causing a respiratory arrest.
The report has found that the terrain and flight conditions were both favourable while there were no pre-existing defects on the powered hang glider.
In addition, the pilot did not hold a Pilot Licence for powered hang gliding and the powered hang glider was not registered.
The Pilot could not avail of the suitable Flight Permit because the Powered Hang Glider was not in compliance with required conditions.
The post-mortem report also states that toxicology tests did not detect the presence of alcohol or drugs.
The report concludes that the Probable Cause of accident was the ‘Loss of control shortly after launch resulting in impact with terrain.’
