Kilrush is the furthest town in Ireland from an emergency department.
The finding is contained in a new report from the Central Statistics Office which has also found that the average resident of the Kilrush Local Electoral Area is almost 70 kilometres from their nearest ED.
The CSO’s ‘Average Distance to Services in Ireland 2026’ report states that residents of the Kilrush and Ennistymon LEAs are the second and fourth-furthest from an emergency department nationwide, respectively.
On a town-by-town basis, Kilrush residents have the greatest distance to travel to their nearest ED, at over 76 kilometres, going by median distance of residential dwellings to services.
The electoral division of Kilballyowen, located between Carrigaholt and Kilbaha, is over 104 kilometres from an ED, the fifth-greatest distance faced by any area in the country.
Kilrush is also the furthest town from a primary care centre at 43 kilometres, and the second-furthest from a maternity department at 75 kilometres.
Within the county, residents of Killanena have the longest journey to their closest general practicioner, with the average person living over 15 kilometres from their nearest GP.
