Remains Discovered In Bunratty Confirmed As Those Of Missing Limerick Man

Fresh DNA tests on partial human remains discovered in Bunratty in 2001 have been confirmed as those of a a man missing from Limerick for nearly two decades.

Aengus “Gussie” Shanahan was reported missing by his family in February, 2000.

Gardaí will now carry out a full review of the case.

Aengus ‘Gussie’ Shanahan, from Ashbrook, on the Ennis Road in Limerick was reported missing by his family on the 11th February, 2000 and hasn’t been seen since.

He finished work in Dell in Castletroy that day, and went to Coopers Bar on St Joseph’s Street in Limerick City, and was last seen walking on Old School House Lane, which connects with Barrington Street in the city.

On the 28th October 2001, partial remains were discovered at Quay Island, Bunratty, by the Bunratty Search and Rescue team.

Developments in DNA technologies have allowed for these to be re-examined, and compared with relatives of missing persons.

Those tests have confirmed that the remains are those of Gussie Shanahan.

In light of this development, a fresh appeal for information on his disappearance is being made.

Supt. Eamonn O’Neill is based at Roxboro Garda Station, which has led this investigation.
