Clare has recorded the highest released prisoner re-offending rate in the country.
New CSO figures show the re-offending rate in this county was far above the national average in 2023.
49 people with a Clare address were released from prison in 2023.
Within a year, however, 31 of these individuals had re-offended , giving Clare a re-offending rate of 63% for the year.
It’s by far the highest on record in this county, and by far the highest rate nationwide for the year concerned, with Limerick coming in second at 52%, it’s also well above the national average of 41%.
By contrast , Longford recorded the lowest re-offending rate in the country at just 15%.
The data also shows the number of prisoners from Clare being released on an annual basis has fallen 46% from the peak of 92 recorded in 2019.
Although a county-by county breakdown isn’t available, the most common offences within the one-year release timeframe were theft, attempts and threats to murder, harassment and public order.
