A Clare infectious diseases expert has described the relaxation of restrictions as a “big experiment”.
Professor James McInerney, who is the Head of the School of life Sciences at the University of Nottingham says he was surprised to see the Government relax Covid-19 restrictions completely over the weekend, as Ireland has so far taken a much more cautious approach than many other countries.
The Sixmilebridge native believes that unless we see a new variant of concern, hospitalisations and deaths will likely stay at a lower rate, particularly once new medications for treating the virus come on stream.
Professor McInerney says we’re moving towards the tail end of the acute phase of the pandemic.
