Staff at Clare County Council’s Recycling Centre in Ennis are being praised for their quick thinking upon finding a old but viable grenade at the facility.

The supervisor alerted Gardaí and the defence forces after the explosive device – which dates back to the Civil war was discovered among recyclable metal at the site on the Gort Road yesterday morning.
A team from the Army Bomb Disposal Unit then carried out a controlled explosion on the grenade as it was considered to be live.
