Rate Of Homelessness In Clare Holding Firm Despite Exits From Emergency Accommodation

The rate of homelessness in this county is holding firm despite eight households and eight individuals exiting emergency accommodation in the past month.

It comes as the MidWest region retains the highest rate of homeless of any part of Ireland, outside of Dublin.

The Department of Housing has recorded 65 people homeless in Clare in the last week of May, down one from the previous month.

In the last seven days of May, 5,843 adults across the country accessed local authority managed emergency services.

A Clare FM analysis of official homeless figures finds that the MidWest region, classified by the Department as Clare and Limerick, accounts for 5% of the the overall homeless population – a total of 286 adults.

Over 60% of adults registered as homeless in the region were aged between 25-44.

The Department of Housing figures available refer to only adults, however, figures from the Clare Homeless Action Team show that eight households exited homeless services between April 22nd and May 25th.

Of those eight households, two were housed in own door properties through HAP, leasing, AHB and local authority allocations, three were discharged, two returned to family or friends, and one went to rehab or hospital.

In addition to this, eight individuals moved from hotel accommodation to supported shared living accommodation under the new Clann Nua project – a MidWest Simon initiative.
