Rape Crisis Midwest Welcomes Proposed Consent Law Change

Rape Crisis Midwest claims a proposed change to legislation around consent would bring Ireland in line with international standards.

It comes as the Government is considering modifying consent laws to the effect that “honest belief” is no longer a defence in rape cases.

Currently, an accused person can use the claim that they honestly believed their accuser had consented to a sexual act as a defence.

Executive Director of Rape Crisis Midwest Siobhan O’Leary insists accused persons should outline the steps they took to see if they had consent.
