Today the local authority confirmed it can’t use any of the information received as part of the grant application forms to chase up those who haven’t paid the household charge.

It also admits the letter it sent out with applications for college grants was simply done in an effort to raise awareness of the need to pay the 100 euro tax.

The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner says any information gathered by Clare County Council in connection with student grants can’t be used to pursue the household charge.

However speaking on Clare FM’s Morning Focus – Head of Finance Niall Barrett says they are dealing with the issues separately
