€242,000 will be spent on maintaining traveller accommodation sites in Clare this year, despite the fact, that some have been repeatedly burnt out, while others are vacant.

In its budget plans for 2014 Clare County Council is still making provision for legal cases alleging traveller discrimination, while it’s also finding it difficult to insure sites like Beechpark in Ennis, as it’s been vandalised and burnt out several times.

No one lives there at present, though CCTV has been paid for at the site, as well as in Ballymurtagh in Shannon, while complete refurbishment works are required at Ashline and Watery Road in Ennis, as well as two houses at the Deerpark site in Ennistymon.

Ennis Councillor Brian Meaney has said he believes the Council can’t continue to fund traveller houses if they’re going to be vandalised.
