Public order offences in Clare have risen by more than 25% in the space of a year.
New data published by the Central Statistics Office reveals that while declines have been seen in a number of major areas, including theft, there’s been a year-on-year spike in public order and other social code offences.
The figures, which relate to the period of July to August of 2024, show that once again, “theft and related offences” was the most common type of crime committed in Clare.
The total number of instances of this offence recorded was 281 which although higher than the previous two quarters was down 5% on the same period in 2023.
Shop theft, which was the second most common type of offence, remained relatively static compared to the same period of the previous year with 164 instances recorded.
When it came to public order and other social code offences, which deal with how people behave in public places, 138 incidents were recorded between July and August.
This was 29 above the figure for the same period in 2023, indicating a surge of 27%.
Attempts or threats to murder, assaults, harassments and related offences saw a drop of 22%.
Similarly, a decline of 18% was observed in instances of disorderly conduct.
