Public Health Officials Warn Of Rise In RSV Cases In Midwest

Health officials are reporting another rise in RSV cases across the Midwest.

Nearly 300 cases of the virus have been recorded in Clare, Limerick and North Tipperary over the past four weeks.

RSV mainly affects children aged 0 to 4, but Public Health Midwest says it’s seen a noticeable increase in infections in adults, with socialising over the holidays likely to have led to the wave of infection.

Those with symptoms of a cold or flu are urged not to socialise or attend work until feeling well or asymptomatic for 48 hours, amid concerns of increased respiratory diseases placing further strain on health services.

Ennis GP Dr Máire Finn has been telling Clare FM’s Rebecca O’Sullivan that it’s an ‘immunity naivety’ brought about by reduced socialisation during the Covid-19 pandemic which has led to the surge.
