The Department of Public Health Midwest is advising people in this county that the next few weeks are critical in preventing spread of COVID-19 and the Omicron variant.

In a statement this afternoon, the body says it does ‘not know yet what this wave will be like for us’ in the Midwest region.

They say they are preparing for the worst and hoping for the best when it comes to the new strain of the virus.

Public health officials here are advising anyone who has cold symptoms, no matter how mild, to arrange to undergo a PCR test.

4,042 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Midwest region in the last 2 weeks alone, with 1,356 of these here in Clare.

As of yesterday, this county’s 14 day incidence rate stands at 1,220.4 per 100,000 people – which is around the middle of the road out of the 26 counties nationwide.

Public Health Midwest say they do ‘expect to see an increase in cases over the coming weeks linked to Christmas celebrations’.
