Promotion Of Holy Island ‘Vital’ To Keep East Clare Tourism Operators In Business

It’s claimed the promotion of Holy Island as a major attraction for East Clare will be vital to keeping tourist operators there in business.

The historic site was brought into public ownership three years ago and now locals there are insisting it’s time to launch it.

In 2015, the historic monastic site of Holy Island, near the Scarriff shore of Lough Dough, was bought by Clare County Council.

It had been privately owned for a number of years but the island dates back centuries.

Its many attractions include a well preserved Round Tower, the ruins of six churches.

It’s now being hailed as a major opportunity for tourism, with the opportunity to bring potentially thousands of visitors to the east of the county.

Eoin O’Hagan says it’s time now that communities on Lough Derg get a bite of the cherry that West Clare has been enjoying for decades:

While Clare has seen strong visitor numbers this year, concern is being expressed that those in the East of the county are being forgotten about.

Nuala Kilkenny runs a bar and restaurant in Tuamgraney and sees many of the visitors already coming to East Clare stop in.

But she feels the North East of the county in particular needs a boost – and Holy Island could be the golden ticket.
