Prominent Ennis Traveller Campaigner Believes ‘Bias’ Causing Accommodation Shortage For Community

A prominent Ennis campaigner for the Travelling community believes bias is a big factor in the level of accommodation shortage for Traveller families and individuals.

It’s been revealed as many as many as half of Clare’s 70 people identifying as homeless are from the community, despite the total make up of Travellers in Clare’s total population being less than one percent.

Fresh concerns have also been raised regarding an illegal encampment in Sixmilebridge at this week’s Joint Policing Committee meeting, with Clare Gardai suggesting a summons has been issued in the individual case.

The local authority has previously told Clare FM that it spent more than 1 million euro on traveller accommodation schemes last year.

Ennis Traveller Kathleen Sherlock, of the Minceir Whidden group, believes more willingness to engage with the community needs to be shown by stakeholders in Clare.
