Pro Life Campaign Voices Opposition to Clare TD’s Bill

The Pro Life Campaign has criticised a bill which has been drawn up by a Clare TD and seeks to allow for abortions in cases of fatal foetal abnormalities.

Deputy Michael McNamara is presenting his bill to the Dáil today, but it will be a number of months before it is debated, as Clare FM's Edel Hynes reports.

Deputy McNamara says his bill would allow for pregnancy to be terminated only in the case where two obstetricians have certified that the unborn child cannot be born allive, or in cases where the foetus is developing without a brain.

While a similar bill from Independent TD Clare Daly was recently feared to be unconstitutional, he's hopeful that his own law could be put before TDs and Senators in the months ahead.

He thinks the current laws bring undue hardship on some families, and that they need to changed.

This afternoon, however, the Pro Life Campaign has rejected the Clare TD's assertion that new laws are needed.

Spokesperson Eilis Mulroy wants to see the unborn child protected, even in cases where their prognosis is grave.

Deputy McNamara is presenting his Bill to the Dáil today, but it won't be voted on until after the summer break, if at all.

The Oireachtas Health Committee is to hold hearings on the issue of fatal foetal abnormalities and he will wait until after these before bringing the Bill forward.
