President to be made Ennis freeman this month

It’s been confirmed that President Michael D. Higgins is to be made a freeman of Ennis later this month.

President Higgins, who spent much of his childhood at Ballycar near Newmarket on Fergus, will be awarded with the honour during a visit to Ennis on February 22nd.

Last September, the Office of the Secretary General to the President confirmed that he will take up the invitation to accept the honour, initially offered in the aftermath of his election.

In September 2009, Muhammad Ali was named the first honorary freeman of the county town during his historic visit to Clare.
