President Michael D Higgins has received the county’s highest honour as a civic reception has been held at Aras Chontae an Chlair this afternoon.
President Higgins, who spent much of his childhood at Ballycar near Newmarket on Fergus, addressed local representatives and invited guests at Clare Cuonty Council’s Headquarters in Ennis, on this first formal visit to the county town since his election last year.

He will then travel on to Scariff later this afternoon where he will visit the Irish Seedsavers Seed Bank Facility and mark the 25th anniversary of the East Clare Community Co-Op.
