The President of Ireland has hailed the importance of Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann in spreading Irish music and culture throughout the world.

Michael D. Higgins was speaking after he officially opened this year's 65th version of the world's largest traditional music festival, which takes place in Ennis.
Over 12,000 people turned out for the opening celebrations, at which President Higgins also hailed Clare and its musicians for being at the forefront of traditional music over several generations.
