The Association of Municipal Authorities of Ireland say the new legislation compromises peoples’ democratic rights, and want the President to refer it to the Supreme Court.

The Bill was only passed last night, but it’s measures to abolish Town Councils and change the membership of County Councils are set to come into effect in time for the local elections on May 23rd.

Shannon Councillor Patricia McCarthy is a past President of the A.M.A.I and thinks the changes are a mistake.
