The effects of the famine have been described as "traumatic, profound and enduring" at todays national commemoration event in Kilrush.
The 5th annual Commemorataion held on Francis Street in Kilrush was attended by the President Michael D Higgins as well as Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Jimmy Deenihan,Bishop of Killaloe Kieran O Reilly and ambassadors from 36 countries as well as local political and community figures
The two hour ceremony consisted of readings from the Mayor of Clare Pat Daly and Mayor of Kilrush Mairead O Brien as performances from local musicans and a wreath laying ceremony
Today’s ceremony is the culmination of over 9 days of events held right across the county to remember "an Gorta Mor" which took place in Ireland between 1845 and 1852.
