The President is defending his wife’s decision to visit an anti-war activist jailed following a protest at Shannon Airport.

Sabina Higgins visited 79-year-old Margaretta D’Arcy in Limerick Prison at the weekend, days after she had a three-month suspended sentence activated for refusing to sign a bond to uphold the law and keep away from unauthorised zones at the airport.
Michael D Higgins says his wife was visiting a long standing friend in a personal and private capacity, and insists that whether it was appropriate or not doesn’t arise at all.
