President Michael D Higgins says he feels it is appropriate for him to contribute to the debate over the EU debt crisis.

There was some criticism of the president after his comments in an interview with the Financial Times where said there needs to be a radical rethink on how EU leaders handle the economic crisis, adding the Eurozone faces a moral crisis.
Defending his remakes Michael D Higgins stated he’s conscious of his role under the constitution and the oath he took in the Presidential office, and he feels his comments fall within that.
He added people don’t have to agree with him, but he feels it’s important to contribute to the debate:
