Praise For ‘Well Managed’ South East Clare Nursing Home In HIQA Report

A South East Clare nursing home has been praised for being ‘well managed’ and allowing residents to have ‘a good quality of life’ in a new report.

The findings are contained in a HIQA assessment published this week after an inspection at Carrigoran Nursing Home in Newmarket-On-Fergus.

The unannounced inspection took place in Carrigoran on the 9th of February this year, when 104 residents were present at the premises on the day.

Inspectors say they witnessed a ‘relaxed and welcoming atmosphere’ when arriving at the facility, with residents speaking highly of individual staff members and the care they received.

HIQA also observed that residents within the St Teresa’s dementia care unit ‘appeared content and relaxed in their environment’.

The inspection took place as the nursing home was emerging from a COVID-19 outbreak, with management reporting the centre’s outbreak plan ‘had worked well in practice’.

Out of the 14 areas it was assessed in on the day, Carrigoran was deemed to be ‘compliant’ in seven, ‘substantially compliant’ in five and ‘not compliant’ in two categories, which were staffing and infection control.

HIQA stated the home didn’t have adequate cleaning staff for the size of the building, with a number of areas of equipment or furniture deemed not suitably clean.

The facility noted that it’s since hired two new nurses and two new housekeeping staff, with deep cleaning and other infection control measures having been implemented since the February inspection.
