Ennis was named overall winner in the Tidy Towns competition last November, adding to its previous success back in 2005.

However, it’s taken a slight drop in the latest survey undertaken by the IBAL group and An Taisce.

Back in October, Ennis was named 3rd out of 40 locations examined, but today’s report shows it’s fallen to 9th.

The county town has maintained its ‘Cleaner Than European Norms’ status though, with seven out of ten sites surveyed getting the top litter grade and no heavily littered sites.

IBAL spokesperson Conor Horgan says it is a positive result for Ennis though, due to co-operation between the local authority and volunteer groups.

The report states that all approach routes were top ranking, creating a positive first impression of the town.

Inspectors said this high standard was present at other sites, including Westpoint Retail Park, O’Connell Street and the the Ennis Recycling Centre on the Gort Road.

Chairperson of Ennis Tidy Towns, Cormac McCarthy, says they’re interpreting the result as a good one for the town despite the slide down the rankings table on this occasion.
